Background
Born on October 18, 1959, he hails from the family of Late Eld. & Mrs. Edet Okon Otu in Adiabo, situated in the serene Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria.
His upbringing was split between his hometown of Calabar and Jos in Plateau State. The latter was where his father served in the mission of the Church of Scotland.
He completed his education with a bachelor’s degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences from the University of Calabar. Before venturing into the world of politics, he gained experience in both banking and the petroleum sector. Alongside these pursuits, he has also found a passion for farming.
Work Profile
House of Representatives (2003-2011)
Prince Bassey Edet Otu began his political journey in April 2003 when he was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives, representing the Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency. His dedication to service led to his re-election in April 2007. During his tenure from 2003 to 2011, he held significant roles, including:
- Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum (Upstream)
- Vice Chairman, House Committee on National Population
- Member of Committees on Power, Ministry of Niger Delta, Inter-Parliamentary Relations, Inter-Intra Party Relations, Environment, Water Resources, and Defense.
In a 2007 interview, he expressed his disagreement with the international court ruling on the Bakassi peninsula’s ownership, emphasizing the need to focus on resettling displaced Nigerians.
As the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), he played a key role in drafting an amendment bill to enhance the Petroleum Technology Development Fund’s efficacy, fostering local content development in the oil and gas industry.
His dedication was further evident in his sponsorship of the Nigerian Content Development Act, a legislation that revolutionized the petroleum sector, positively impacting many lives.
Senator (2011-2019)
In 2011, Prince Bassey Edet Otu was elected as a Senator, representing the Cross River Southern Senatorial District. During this period, he took on significant responsibilities, including:
- Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance
- Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking and other Financial Institutions
- Member of Committees on Navy, Power, Petroleum, and Water Resources.
His time in the Senate was marked by unprecedented contributions to human empowerment and societal development. His name became synonymous with positive change, leading to an endorsement for re-election by the Buhari Youth Organisation.
In 2018, his commitment to public service led to his appointment to the board of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Throughout his career, Prince Bassey Edet Otu has been recognized with numerous national and international awards. His motivation, as he puts it, remains rooted in “joining politics for service to humanity.” This commitment is exemplified by his continuous efforts in empowering individuals through various means such as land awards, financial support, car awards, scholarships, and more. His legacy of empowerment stands strong and unparalleled.
